FAQs
Will my cat have to be registered? The new legislation applies differently to cats which are born, bought, sold, given away or otherwise change owners after 1 July 1999 to those which were already owned at this date. To put it simply, if you get a cat, or if a cat is born after this date, it will need to be microchipped and registered just as are dogs. Cats which are already settled with owners are not subject to these requirements. Many people may wish to gain the benefits of registering and permanently identifying their existing cats. This is highly recommended in order to maximise your chances of having your cat returned to you if it gets lost, and to give it the protection of the new laws. Details about registering your existing cat can be obtained from your local council.
